This advanced level session will review benefits & risks of sexual expression among individuals living with dementia and complexities related to sexual expression, including hyper-sexuality knowledge of the sex partner, and capacity to consent. This workshop will explore sexual expression of residents within care communities and the dilemma between the human need for affection and sexual expression versus the policies and regulations of care facilities. Participants will be encouraged to assess their own value system related to aging and sexuality and sexual expression in the context of dementia. Workshop will then explore ways in which an individual’s values surrounding sexual expression may vary from family members’ (decision making surrogate’s) values, as well as a residential system/institutional policies or values. Current guidelines for determining sexual decision-making capacity will be reviewed. Vignettes and case studies will be used to challenge participants to think deeply about ethical and moral dilemmas that arise in the process of sexual consent and decision-making.
9:00-9:30AM: Explore the concept of sexual self-determination and common biases related to sexual self-determination among older adults and adults with major neurocognitive disorders (e.g., dementia) 9:30-10:30AM: Discuss benefits & risks of sexual expression in context of dementia disorders and diminished capacity 10:30-10:45AM: Break 10:45am-12pm: Review research on sexual expression in long-term care communities and evaluate values related to sexual expression and decision making among older adults and adults with dementia. Reflect on ways values may influence determinations of sexual decision making. 12-1pm Lunch 1-2:30pm Discuss and apply current evidence-based guidelines for determining sexual decision-making 2:30-2:45 Break 2:45-4:30 Contemplate ethical dilemmas as they relate to sexual expression, decision making, and long-term care community policies and guidelines.

Our provider directory can help you find a mental health professional who specializes in older adults.
A neuropsychologist is specialized in diagnosing brain disorders, like dementia (specifically what type of dementia a person has). They also help to identify if the changes in your loved one are mental health changes (like depression and anxiety) or brain health changes like a dementia disorder.
Geriatric psychiatrists (also called Gero-Psychiatrists) are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues that occur more commonly in older adults, such as dementia, depression, insomnia. They prescribe medications, but may or may not provide therapy.
“Therapist” is a broad term to identify licensed professionals trained to provide talk-therapy to treat or manage mental health conditions. They include psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and licensed marriage and family therapists. Our therapists specialize in older adults.
