Sandwiched Between Children & Aging Parents?

Pass the Mayo!

Raise your hand if you’ve heard of the Sandwich Generation!

What? No hands? You’ve heard of a Millennial, you’ve heard of a Baby Boomer, but you probably haven’t heard of the Sandwich Generation.

So here we go…

If you have a parent 65 or older and are raising a child under 18, or, supporting a grown child (here’s my shoulder, feel free to cry), you, my friend, are in the Sandwich Generation. And, you’re not alone. Nearly half of adults in their 40s and 50s are right along side of you, not to mention millions of people under 40 and over 60.

Now, raise your hand if you are a part of the Sandwich Generation. Hand still down? Not to worry, there’s probably a sandwich just for you. Hungry for a Club?

(Tired of reading? Watch the Video!)

As you can imagine, The Club Sandwich Generation is super layered, with 50 or 60 year olds wedged between aging parents, their adult children, and their grandchildren.

I bet this sandwich is served with a pickle.

Or, flip that club over, and what do you have? You guessed it… another club, but this time, it’s filled with people in their 30s and 40s who have younger children, aging parents, and aging grandparents.

I hear your stomach growling all of you out there with aging parents but no children. Don’t worry, there are enough sandwiches to go around. For you we have the delicious Open Faced Sandwich Generation.

Before you think I work for Subway, these terms are legit. Look ’em up!

Nobody teaches us about aging and all of the complexities that come with it. You know, like managing chronic or unexpected illness, like losing the person you love one piece at a time to dementia, like having “the talk” about stopping driving, like experiencing resentment followed by guilt that you are being asked to step in and care for your parent, and the list goes on.

Being caught in the middle is REALLY hard. You’re running between work, taking care of your kids, and managing unexpected challenges with your aging parents.

Just when you think you have it all figured out- like you have everything packed to go on your kid’s first field trip, the hospital calls and tells you that your dad needs your help, and there you are, in a bind thinking, “my kid will have more field trips, but my dad not so much”.

You’re pulled in so many directions, it’s hard to make time for yourself. Well, I’m here to help. I’ll walk you through the most complicated situations with your aging parents, and help you manage being caught in the middle.

So pass the mayo! Let’s get started!

Lots of love to you and your family,

Dr. Regina Koepp
